167 students enroll in charter school

Gillingham Charter School has 167 students enrolled in kindergarten through ninth grade, an official said Friday.

According to Lori Quinn, Pottsville, vice president of Gillingham's board of trustees and director of public relations and marketing for the school, the students come from 14 school districts.

"We are not breaking out the numbers per grade until we can analyze the numbers and determine if a lottery will need to happen," Quinn said by telephone. "We would certainly want to notify the parents first if a lottery situation will occur."

During a trustees meeting Thursday, Christie Werkheiser, Minersville, the school's director of organizational development, said if a lottery is needed, the school would notify the parents whose children might be involved so they could attend the drawing.

Children of Gillingham's founding members and parents who signed pre-enrollment forms will be given first consideration. The remaining number of student seats will then be determined by a lottery, Nicolle Hutchinson, Gillingham's director of education/chief executive officer, said in a previous story.

Quinn said the school would cap its total enrollment at 220, with a goal of 20 children per grade level. However, accommodations could be made if one child from a family is enrolled, all children in a family may also attend Gillingham.

The school is scheduled to open Sept. 6 in the former St. Stephen Regional Elementary School, Port Carbon, to allow time for renovations of the former St. John the Baptist school at 915 Howard Ave., Pottsville, Gillingham's permanent location.

That work is expected to be completed by the end of September, Werkheiser said Thursday.

During Thursday's meeting, the board voted to finalize a line of credit and a construction loan with Meridian Bank with a tentative closing date of Aug. 25. Quinn said Friday that the line of credit the school is asking for is $125,000 while the loan is for $150,000.

It was mistakenly reported there was an additional line of credit and loan being sought by the school.

"Meridian Bank is the only lender," Quinn said Friday.

Quinn also said the finance committee and the school's business managers, Charter Choices, Glenside, are scheduled to meet Friday to finalize the school's operating budget.

"Right now, the finances are in a state of transition and we are in the process of handing the finances over from the ad hoc finance committee to Charter Choices," Quinn said.
