Matanglawin: Animals like Jose Rizal
National heroes are one in a million, but have you ever wondered what Jose Rizal would be as if he were an animal?
It seems odd, especially during the celebration of the 150th anniversary of his birthday, but Kuya Kim takes on the challenge of finding where the animals are like heroes in their own right!
When the hero is said word, "martyr" comes to mind. But did you know that it takes more than being shot by a platoon of Spanish soldiers have the right to obtain a statue in Luneta and the right to be called the national hero of the Philippines?
José Rizal, for example, is known for its intelligence. And as our King Trivia Kuya Kim, Rizal was an avid reader and student discipline, which at the age of 26, has written two books most influential in the history of the Philippines: Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo.
Like a chameleon, Rizal used what he had to his advantage to blend into the crowd. While the chameleon uses its ability to change colors for camouflage to avoid being eaten by predators, Rizal read all the books available and studied to learn as much as the Spanish students gave up his guardian to teach him, because they had nothing else to teach the boy!Rizal finished as a polyglot who can speak fluent Filipino, Spanish, Latin, Greek, English, French, Italian and Portuguese. He also invented a lighter wood used to create flames from the air called "Sulpakan."
However, the book-intelligence is not the only thing that Rizal had up his sleeve. He was also resourceful and knew its strengths and weaknesses, so that it can adapt. In the animal kingdom, rapid adaptation is the key to survival, which explains why, even if a squirrel is tiny, he realized he could puff his tail to scare away hungry cobras.
Compared to its peers, Rizal was short in height to 5 '2 ". His solution? He lifted weights using cans attached to a stick to build muscle mass. Many animals use this technique to appear more to avoid being the prey in the food chain. Apart from the squirrels, iguanas do so using their baleen while Asian painted frogs inflate when threatened.
But size is not always the answer because for stoats, a small mammal, the speed makes up more than enough.A rabbit is bigger, but would you believe that only a stoat can hunt during the race almost as fast as Usain Bolt, the fastest man in the world at 20 miles per hour?
Skunks and ferrets do differently if, instead of just make it look bigger or using lightning reflexes, they excrete disgusting smells like wet socks, rotten eggs and burning rubber to ward off enemies and predators. They smell so bad that even if you're 10 feet, you can still be affected!
