Public Preview of Adobe Edge Available for HTML5 Web Animation Creation

Adobe's latest content creation tool is perhaps appropriately named, given that the firm has been edging, rather than diving, into the quickly evolving space for HTML5-based content creation. Adobe's reluctance to visibly move away from the Flash "ecosystem," as the firm likes to call it, is understandable, given the massive investment it has made in this lumbering behemoth of a technology over the years. But with Microsoft recently abandoning Silverlight, its one-time Flash-killer, and Apple showing no signs or releasing its choke hold on all things Flash, Adobe doesn't really have much choice but to start embracing the inevitable marginalization of Flash. Remember Java? It's still a useful technology but not for spinning icons on web sites. Flash is pretty much in the same camp. As well, tiny developers like Tumult are beginning to release applications, in this case Hype , which can do the HTML5 dance in pretty convincing fashion. If that's the case people eventually wonder why one of the world's largest software developers is slow to the party. Hence Edge.

The public preview of Edge (what is that exactly, something between an alpha and a beta?) is now available for free download on the Adobe Labs site and will be closely watched. We're told it "will be updated regularly to add new functionality, stay ahead of evolving web standards, and incorporate user feedback," which is certainly good news. With this first release users can create new compositions using Edge’s drawing and text tools; import web graphics in such formats as SVG, PNG, JPG or GIF; choreograph animation with the timeline editor; animate position, size, color, shape and rotation at the property level; add motion to existing HTML files, while preserving the integrity of CSS-based HTML layouts; and copy and paste transitions, invert them and choose from over 25 built-in easing effects for added creativity.
