Beach Boys Brian Wilson, Mike Love working on songs for new album

The long wait may be over for Beach Boys fans.

Founding members Brian Wilson and Mike Love are writing songs for a proposed new studio album.

“I’ve been speaking with Brian and there’s talk about getting together musically. He asked me to do some lyrics for songs that he’s developing, and I have some songs that I have done over the last several years. And, we’re going to see if we can do them as part of a Beach Boys’ effort,” Love told The Republican.

Surviving original Beach Boys Love, Wilson and Al Jardine have not recorded or performed together in more than a decade.

The Beach Boys have not released new material since the poorly received “Stars and Stripes Vol. 1” album in 1996. Wilson had rejoined his former Beach Boys to produce and provide harmonies on that album.

Love, speaking to promote his appearance at the MGM Grand Theater at Foxwoods on Aug. 12, said the proposed reunion recording was spurred by a milestone event.

“There’s every likelihood that we will do it in light of the fact that this is the 50th anniversary of the band,” he said, adding the album would not be ready until next year.

While there had been talk, mostly rumors, about a Beach Boys anniversary concert, it looks like the album is the priority now, Love said.

“I’d still love to do a symphonic tour all around the world,” Love said.

It’s been a half-century since the Beach Boys were formed as a surf rock band in 1961 in Hawthorne, Calif., and recorded their first single, “Surfin.’” The group’s original lineup consisted of brothers Brian, Dennis and Carl Wilson, cousin Love, and friend Jardine. At the height of their career in the mid 1960s, the Beach Boys released what critics and fans alike considered their ultimate musical masterpieces – the album “Pet Sounds,” whose harmonic vibes were enough to catch the ears and praise of the Beatles, and the single “Good Vibrations,” both released in 1966.

However, in an effort to outdo the Beatles’ groundbreaking “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” album, Brian Wilson, faced with the pressure and the increasing use of drugs, suffered a massive breakdown while trying to create the perfect album, “Smile,” leaving the band without their master creator, never to achieve the success of former efforts.
