Wave 17th Year Anniversary Special

Imagine no cable. No Internet. No FM radio, too. In was an innocent time. There was the euphoria of the democracy movement in 1990. We hadn't suffered the pain of growing up and we thought the country was headed to a bright future. It was a time of hope and new beginnings.

A group of pioneering young people got together and wondered why Nepal didn't have a music magazine in English for teenagers. One that would not only discuss new and upcoming bands and pay homage to the legends but one that would deal with issues concerning youngsters- education, technology, travel, fashion and style. And with that idea, a world of song books and lyrics, cool bands and top models, and a voice dedicated to our generation was born.

Today, as WAVE celebrates its 17^th anniversary, we look to the past and ask our writers and editors to contribute to a magazine they helped develop, grow and evolve. Most have gone on to carve careers in fields other than journalism, but all retain a deep affection and concern for WAVE. And why wouldn't they: a whole generation of young Nepali urbanites grew up looking to WAVE every month for ideas, suggestions, analysis, advice, information and entertainment. They continue to do so.

WAVE has undergone various avatars and in recent times realised that its audience has matured, and we have followed suit. But what will never change is that we will continue to do our best to ensure that WAVE retains its place as the numero uno English magazine for young people in the country.

So on your 17^th birthday and ours, allow us to raise our glasses and celebrate the magazine you were and the one you are becoming... you've come a long way, baby.

The way forward
I had never imagined that I would be a part of Nepal's oldest English youth magazine.  It was a surreal yet lovely experience. The best thing about WAVE is that there is always something to read and learn from unlike most glossy local English magazines available in the market. I joined WAVE in its transition towards adulthood, which created equilibrium between challenge and fun on my part. The biggest challenge was letting our readers figure out gently that we were transforming from a musical teeny-bop to a voluminous adult magazine. Therefore I thoroughly enjoyed the freedom given to the team in going wild with our creativity, imagination and words. For heaven's sake, where can you read about pubic hair and sexuality in its most liberal form other than WAVE? Similarly, I am very proud that we were able to bring out the hidden faces of the many deserving Nepalis who have progressed in their fields through their own struggles and fights, not because they are some rich socialites.  However, all this would have been impossible without the wonderful team that I got to work with. And an important lesson learned is that improvisation and compromising are the two biggest assets to working professionally in Nepal!
