Police Department to Heighten Ogden Avenue Presence on Tuesday
There’s a reason that Western Springs police officers frequently speed-trap Ogden Avenue, especially west of Wolf Road: when coming off of I-294, it’s incredibly easy to forget to slow down to 35 mph.
But, of course, driving through Western Springs at 55 mph is a bad idea for a lot of reasons—number one being that it’s dangerous for both drivers and community members. And the Western Springs Police Department say they want to get that message out—perhaps with a little bit of tough love.
So, on Tuesday, August 16, the Department pledges to be “aggressively enforcing” speeding and seat belt laws along the 1.25-mile stretch of Ogden Avenue that runs through the Village.
The initiative is part of a cross-county campaign to promote safer driving on Ogden Avenue, also known as U.S. Route 34 nationally. (Route 34 actually stretches all the way west to the tiny town of Granby, Colorado.) Counties involved in the initiative are Kendall, Kane, DeKalb, LaSalle and DuPage as well as Cook.
“The main objective of the campaign is to increase the safety of motorists who travel on Ogden Avenue by providing enhanced public education and traffic support,” read a Department press release.
The release also contained statistics from the Insurance Institute for National Highway Safety, stating that speeding kills 900 Americans every month (30 each day, more than one every hour) and is a contributing factor in 31 percent of fatal crashes.
“The Western Springs Police Department would like to remind all motorists to buckle up and drive safely,” read the release.
