The R56 has been voted the most scenic route between KwaZulu-Natal and the Cape. Many people have told me they would now never consider the N2 through the Transkei as an option.

Clearly, it was time to check out the R56, which is tarred the whole way, and has scenery in its corner of the ring. According to those who use it, is also infinitely safer to travel.

Picking up the route in Kokstad, we headed for Matatiele, where we overnighted at Resthaven Guest House. Their self-catering accommodation is the last word in comfort, and they offer reduced rates over the weekend.

The town had an air of vibrancy about it, and a church bazaar was in full swing, so we mingled with the friendly locals, tucking into pancakes and other delectables.

The mountain passes of Qacha’s Nek and Ongeluksnek into Lesotho lured, but had to be placed on the back burner for another trip. Nevertheless, you can drive a short distance towards the base of the mountains, through farmlands, taking in the scenery.

The next morning, we continued to Mount Fletcher. The bastion of the southern Drakensberg and the Maluti Mountains in Lesotho is constantly in view as the road winds, climbs and descends towards Maclear, Ugie, Elliot, Dordrecht, Molteno, Steynsburg and ultimately Middelburg in the Cape.

From here you can choose a route that will connect you with the N1 and Cape Town, or take the road to Graaff-Reinet if you plan a visit to the coast or Garden Route.

Life, though, is about the journey rather than just the destination, and the R56 allows a traveller to deviate into some of the most beautiful parts of the north-eastern Cape.

Shortly after leaving Mount Fletcher, it is possible to swing away towards Rhodes, via Naude’s Nek – the highest pass in the country navigable by a sedan.

Rhodes is one of the most delightful villages in South Africa, and a haven for fly fishermen.

The nearby Tiffendell Ski Resort apparently went up for auction earlier this year. The outcome? I have not been able to establish this.

Instead of heading for Rhodes, we chose to overnight in Elliot, an area of amazing rock formations, dramatic back roads and scenery.
