Wireless audio options provide 'music as you go'

Good news! You can have "music wherever you go," just like your friend. The best solutions for your vintage home may be the most cutting-edge…because they’re wireless.

Today’s wireless home sound systems deliver high-quality sound, don’t require anything to be installed in your existing walls or ceilings and, especially compared to rewiring your home, are very affordable.

"Lite" Music

One of the least disruptive systems available may be MusicLites, from Artison in partnership with Osram Sylvania. This wireless light/speaker combination fits existing light fixtures to provide both high-quality lighting and high-fidelity audio.

"It uses special speakers in the form of LED light bulbs," explained Sam Batra, manager of Saga Electronics, Tenafly (sagaelectronics.com, 201-503-0700). "If you put in a transmitter, you can have audio for the whole house."

Each bulb is equivalent to a BR 30 Long Life light bulb. You can assign up to five zones with up to 12 MusicLites modules per zone. A 70 mm high-fidelity loudspeaker offers a full range of high-performance audio, and the system’s proprietary 2.4 GHz wireless transceiver has a range of 30-90 feet. This allows for whole-house audio distribution without the expense — or disruption — of traditional rewiring.

"Plus, they can work of your iPod, computer, radio station or TV," Batra added.

Singing Parrots

If you’re not a strict purist about your traditional décor, check out Zikmu Parrot speakers by Starck. These can broadcast music stored in a variety of sources, including your PC, Bluetooth or mobile phone. An iPod/iPhone dock (which requires an electrical outlet) enables you to access those sources, and an analog Hi-Fi input lets you connect to a CD player or TV set.

The Parrot speaker is a sleek column about 30 inches tall; unlike a conventional speaker, which broadcasts straight ahead, it transmits sound in all directions. So, if you don’t mind the minimalist styling, the Parrot offers another wireless audio solution.

Expect to spend about $1,600 for a pair of speakers plus the docking station. The speakers come in black, white, gray, red or lime green, which should help them blend in. Batra notes that Saga Electronics is the exclusive dealer for the Zikmu Parrot in North Jersey.

Web Tunes

Yet another wireless option, Sonos, gives you access to unlimited music from Internet sources. Connect to your iPod or computer hard drive and stream music around the house. Also, access a playlist through iTunes or broadcast from Internet sources such as Rhapsody, Napster and Pandora and radio stations such as Sirius.
