Visith The Barnegat (Old Barney) Lighthouse
Barnegat Lighthouse is probably the most symbolic of all New Jersey lighthouses. “Old Barney”, as it is affectionately known, is the most recognized of all the NJ lighthouses. Its image is even available on NJ license plates.
The original Barnegat Lighthouse was built in 1834 and along with the Fire Island Light, helped navigators pin point entrance into the New York Harbor. It stood forty feet high, but the beam was deemed inadequate because of its fifth class light. After years of battling sea erosion, this lighthouse fell into the sea in 1857. But thanks to great foresight, the light had been removed and placed on a wooden tower until a new lighthouse could be constructed.
In 1855 the designer of the Absecon Lightouse and Civil War hero, Lt. George G. Meade, was commissioned to design a new lighthouse. The new structure’s tower light would stand 165 feet above sea level and house a first-order Fresnel lens. This beam could be seen almost 30 miles out to sea. The lens consists of 1,024 prisms of glass mounted in a brass frame. It is eight feet in diameter and stands fifteen feet high. Today it is on display at the Barnegat Light Museum.
Barnegat Light, the second tallest lighthouse in the United States, was first lit in 1857 and was deactivated in 1944. In 1927 the Barnegat Lightship was anchored eight miles offshore and the tower’s light was reduced by 80 per cent. In 1965 the lightship was removed making way for electronic navigation. During World War II the lighthouse was used a a look out tower by our military to spy on prowling German U-boats.
Today, still fondly regarded, Barnegat Light is the reason thousands of tourists visit Barnegat Lighthouse State Park each summer. If you’re daring enough, come and climb its 217 steps and see spectacular views of the Jersey Shore.
