The secret art of Dr. Seuss

It's HAND's mission to bring the performing, literary and visual arts to the Duke medical community. "At HAND, we look at ways to alleviate stress, because we know that your mood can affect your health," Woodford said. For more than 30 years, the organization has mounted exhibits, provided musicians and organized poetry gatherings and performances at the hospital complex for those who work there and those who need to come there.

The Doctor Is In: Artwork by Dr. Seuss | Duke Today

- The Health Arts Network at Duke (HAND) is hosting an exhibit of  "the Secret Art of Dr. Seuss" in the North Corridor Gallery at Duke University Hospital from July 12 to August 22, 2011. The exhibition includes limited edition serigraphs, lithographs and sculptures created by the author/illustrator over a period of 60 years. All artworks are available for purchase.

"HAND is pleased to be one of the few venues worldwide to exhibit the personal artworks of an American icon who has delighted generations of children and adults alike," said Olivia Woodford, HAND director. "The exhibit promises to bring beauty, celebrate community and touch the spirit of the Duke medical community and of all who visit the gallery that is adjacent to the hospital main lobby."

Although he never earned a medical degree, Theodor Seuss Geisel, Dr. Seuss, authored countless prescriptions for fun. Best known for his children's books like Green Eggs and Ham -- the third largest-selling book in the English language -- Seuss created a host of memorable characters in the irrepressible Cat in the Hat, the loveable Horton and the unforgettable Grinch.

However, Geisel, who died in 1991, reveals a different side of himself in the images in this collection. Although these pieces still reflect the humorous and playful fantasy creatures of his children's books, these works are not limited to a primary palette of colors, by the size of a book page or to children's themes.

Together with the exhibit, HAND is holding a raffle for two limited edition framed Seuss serigraphs:

Green Eggs and Ham

Raffle tickets are $5 for one or $25 for six and can be purchased online at www.seusscarolinas.com or at the Mars Gallery from 11:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the exhibit.

Proceeds from the raffle and a portion of sales will go toward purchasing artwork for patient rooms in Duke Hospital.

Along with the exhibit, a book discussion, "The Life of Seuss: Reading and Discussion," will be held at noon on Friday, Aug. 5 in Room 1993, Duke Clinic.

At Noon on Tuesday, Aug. 9, "Seussical the Musical," will be performed by Broadway Bound Children's Choir in a mini-concert in the hospital lobby.

The exhibit itself will be on view 24 hours a day.  For further information, visit www.handatduke.org or call the HAND office at (919) 684-6124.

HAND has been designated by the National Endowment for the Arts as one of the outstanding "Arts in Healthcare: Best Practices" programs. Since 1978, HAND has provided performing, literary and visual arts to the Duke medical community. A dedicated team coordinates 675 volunteers and artists to nurture engagement in the arts to enhance the health and wellbeing of Duke patients, their families and staff.
