Youth exhibit makes horse sense

KITCHENER — Vembu Ravichandran stood fascinated Thursday as she watched a video about the delivery of a foal.

“I’ve never seen a horse being born,’’ said the nine-year-old, one of many children visiting EquiMania, an event aimed at getting children interested in horses, at Themuseum in downtown Kitchener.

“It’s really cool how the horse comes out — how the foal’s in a sac,’’ she said.

Ravichandran found the video so interesting, she watched it all the way through twice.

It didn’t have quite the same effect on eight-year-old Aidan McKittrick who was also at EquiMania, an interactive youth exhibit and youth education program that is at the museum until Sept. 5.

“Ewwww,’’ he said loudly as he joined Ravichandran. “I find it really gross.’’

“Oh, it’s not gross. It’s really clean,’’ explained horse breeder and instructor Doug Nash, who was on hand to answer kids’ questions and explain that foals are always born feet-first.

As disgusted as he was, McKittrick didn’t budge until the video was over. But in the end, his opinion hadn’t changed much.

“It’s nasty looking. It looks like aliens,’’ he announced before trotting off to see other intriguing exhibits at EquiMania.

Those included a fibreglass horse showing its muscles and organs, displays on how to wrap horse legs and braid tails, and a large diagram of the digestive system of a human and a horse for comparison, featuring pink intestines.

Children from schools and summer camp programs learned how to behave around horses in order to stay safe.

“Sometimes, people think a horse is like their dog,’’ said Gayle Ecker, director of Equine Guelph, a centre at the University of Guelph dedicated to improving the health and well being of horses.

“Remember, horses are big animals,’’ she said. “You can’t move quickly and you can’t make loud noises.’’

Jackie Bellamy, communications spokesperson with Equine Guelph, said the youth education program teaches children that “horses are fun, but also to be safe around them.

“Horses are, for most people, a recreation,’’ she said. “However, they are dangerous animals.

“Young kids don’t stand a chance around a 1,000-pound horse’’ if they don’t know how to treat the animal, she said.

Bellamy tells children to always approach a horse from its shoulder. Never run up behind a horse because they don’t see well behind them.
