There’s talk of another recession.

Now, of course I understand recession is very serious and some poor souls might lose not their gold cards but their actual livelihoods – but are we not missing a very simple point here?

A point that nature is not so much trying to tell us, as screaming at us.

And that is that in some places in the world – Europe and the USA definitely being two of them – we simply have enough stuff now. Because how many mobile phone chargers, trampolines and computer power leads does one civilisation need, for crying out loud?

At Chez Evans we’re as guilty as anyone else. For example, I went rummaging in our utensils drawer this week for a spare corkscrew, because our super-duper lever-operated one has mysteriously gone AWOL since the lads came round after the rugby last weekend.

As I searched I became gradually more shocked, not to mention embarrassed, to discover we don’t have just one spare corkscrew – we have no less than four spare corkscrews. How, when and why did this happen?

Shamed into embarking on a massive clearout, I rifled through other drawers and counted a brace of whisks, a trio of identical wooden spoons, a veritable collection of spatulas and no less than 27 coffee mugs, 11 of which are of the novelty variety.

It seems to me it’s because of hoarding like this – or in our case simply not noticing – that our country’s roads are snarled up every Sunday morning, when Britain becomes one massive car boot sale.

But, hey, here’s an idea: how about we stop producing everything that we don’t actually need to survive – right now – and see how we get on?

A world full of things we don’t need is threatening the survival of the things we do need, as more and more perfectly good items, from cars to phones, are being retired way before even the slightest suggestion of fatigue, purely because we all want ‘the new one’.
