Oregon State: De Carolis says Casey wanting to get out of coaching is like the ...

Athletic director Bob De Carolis was done talking about his Parkinson’s yesterday, and he was sitting in his office near the Foosball table that he says is “stress relief’’ when he leaned back and asked, “anything else you guys want to ask me?’’

“You still got a baseball coach?’’ was the immediate response.

De Carolis smiled.

Last month, the O.’s Jim Beseda wrote a story detailing how 52-year-old Pat Casey was thinking about stepping down after 17 years and accepting an administrative position in the OSU athletic department.

Such is Casey’s clout in the college baseball world, it set off some not-so-mild shock waves.

The guy led the Beavers to consecutive College World Series titles in 2006 and 2007 and he was named the 2011 Pac-10 Coach of the Year after taking OSU to the post-season for the sixth time in seven seasons.

So what’s new on this front? Was it just Casey venting again?

“He’s still our baseball coach until he tells me otherwise,’’ said De Carolis.

“We haven’t talked in a couple weeks and that’s probably a good sign, I guess.’’

What did De Carolis make of the latest rumblings about Casey giving up coaching?

“You know, it’s like the movie ‘Groundhog Day’ in a sense. We’ve had discussions every year, and then Pat just goes through that cycle.

“I get the impression this might be a little more serious than previous, but sometimes you come out after talking with Pat and you know less than you knew going in. So I don’t really know where he stands on it.’’

I asked De Carolis what Casey would do in an administrative job.

“He’s a gifted fundraiser,’’ said De Carolis, “but I don’t think that would be his only role. As far as fund-raising is concerned, he could certainly try to complete this Pat Casey Endowment Fund that would help endow baseball. That would be a focal point.

“Pat is great at taking projects and making money out of them so I would see him taking some project tat could be maximized, for instance the Palm Springs softball tournament. … we’ve dabbled with doing the same thing with baseball down there.

“Groundhog Day” and the Real Estate Market | REALTOR.com® Blogs

This week, we are taking a look at Realtor responses to the financial turmoil. On Monday we heard from Scott Wurtzbacher of Charlotte, North Carolina. Next up is Realtor® Karen Briscoe of McLean, Viriginia who finds a bit of real estate wisdom in a popular movie:

The world financial markets experienced on August 8, 2011 the worst day since 2008, and I immediately thought of the movie: “Groundhog Day” starring Bill Murray. The story line of this classic movie is that a weatherman finds himself living the same day over and over. The reason the character played by Bill Murray continues to awaken to the same events is that unless HE changes, the circumstances around him remain the same. The character finally learns by doing it over and over that when he wishes he is somewhere else, nothing changes. By actually making the best of the time and place he was stuck in, the circumstances actually did get better. The object lesson of the movie is to learn from the past.

The first quarter of 2011 leading into the summer in many ways kept reminding me of the same time period of 2008, I was experiencing the same “déjà vu” feeling that Bill Murray did in the movie. Buyers were very skittish and it was difficult to keep transactions together. Issues that were relatively easy to work through prior to this time became increasingly difficult. Because 2010 had been a solid year in the real estate market of Northern Virginia where I practice the trade, I thought we were on a trajectory of recovery.

The average sales price in Northern Virginia from 2001 to 2005 had experienced annual double digit appreciation, which everyone who was thinking clearly knew couldn’t be sustained. In 2006 and 2007 the market “lived off the fumes” of the hot real estate market and leveled off as each year saw just .1% sales price appreciation. The correction that was predicted occurred in 2008 and 2009 with -14.4% and -6.5% price depreciation, respectively. When the real estate market in 2010 experienced 8.9% of appreciation, that upward momentum indicated to me a solid year of recovery. Many people proclaimed that we were headed into a “double-dip” and I optimistically said that I thought that wouldn’t happen to the Northern Virginia real estate market. Well I have revised my prediction, the Northern Virginia real estate market is probably headed into a double-dip.
