Janice Barton, Precinct 10

Next Tuesday is outgoing Superintendent Dr. Patti Grenier’s last school committee meeting, time for one more huge “thank you” from the town, and then hopefully we can keep her to her promise to “still be around.”

I recently attended a Recreation Commission meeting where the Osterville Bay School (and the disc golf course at Burgess Park) was on the agenda. Many residents were there to urge the preservation of the building and the ball fields, and it sounded by the end of the presentation that this could be accomplished. The need for improvement on the ball fields and playground was also briefly discussed, and I truly appreciated the comments from two of the Recreation Commissioners supporting recent citizen efforts to help the town improve playgrounds in various villages.

Working with the town, several private groups have and are coming forward with fundraising activities and grant applications to buy equipment and other amenities. Luke’s Love Playground in West Barnstable is a stellar example, and there is an energetic, newly formed Centerville playground group that is raising money by selling T-shirts. In similar fashion, an initiative that will help our Burgess Park in Marstons Mills was presented by members of the newly formed Cape Cod Disc Golf Club.

In return for continuing use of portions of the park, the group is offering support in maintenance and other considerations to help maintain Burgess Park for Millager families. The Marstons Mills Village Association has been concerned about the upkeep of the park for a while, and with the knowledge that town funds for such projects are extremely limited, any and all support is greatly appreciated. I look forward to hearing more about the CC Disc Golf Club and their improvement plans – I may even play a round or two one of these days!

Another group that is taking some initiative and doing well is the Barnstable Dog Park Committee. They have been having some successful fundraisers and are exploring sites in town for possible locations for the first dog park. I would like to thank TM John Klimm, ATM (not a money machine) Tom Lynch, Town Attorney David Houghton, and Lindsey Counsell for researching six possible park locations around town for the site committee’s consideration

All of these individuals and groups should be congratulated for taking the initiative and the time to contribute to a better way of life in Barnstable. Public-private partnerships do work!
