Students from five Syracuse schools unite to present 'Seussical'

Contributing writer

More than 50 high school students from five Syracuse city schools have been working all summer to combine their talents for the district’s annual summer musical, “Seussical,” which will be performed this coming weekend at Nottingham High School .

For five years the Syracuse City School District has planned an annual summer musical as an opportunity for high school students to learn about musical theater and have fun with their classmates — as well as students from other schools.

“It’s really a great opportunity because these kids get to interact with each other outside of classes,” Director Greg Hipius said. “They form such strong connections and friendships through the program when they normally may not get to meet other students from other schools with the same interests.”

The schools that contribute to the musical are Corcoran, Fowler, Henninger, Nottingham high schools and the Institute of Technology at Syracuse Central. The schools rotate hosting the musical each year.

’’This program gets the cream of the crop from each school together and allows the students to do something they normally wouldn’t be able to do during the school year,” Production Manager Sarah Gentile said.

Hipius said he and other teachers talked about doing a summer musical program years before it started and had no idea how successful and beneficial it would be.

“We knew it would be a great idea, and the (former) Superintendent Daniel Lowengard was very open to the discussion of creating this program,” Hipius said. “We are hoping to dedicate the program to him, since this was his last year as superintendent.”

This year’s musical, “ Seussical,” has been on Hipius’ mind since he began teaching theater at Corcoran 10 years ago, and he said it’s a great musical for everyone to enjoy. It combines parts from Dr. Seuss’ most famous books, such as “Horton Hears a Who!” and “The Cat in the Hat,” into a fun and comical performance.

“I had ‘Seussical’ in mind from the start because I was so amazed at how it’s really not just for kids, but for adults, too,” Hipius said. “It’s partially written by Eric Idle, of Monty Python (the British comedy troupe).” Principal credit for creating the show goes to Syracuse University graduate Lynn Ahrens and her longtime collaborator, Stephen Flaherty.
