Plan accordingly for business' success when leaving on dream vacation
By the time you read this, I'll be on safari somewhere in Africa, hopefully watching an elephant, giraffe or lion wander by. I'm taking the vacation I've always dreamed of, but traveling halfway around the world is not a short trip, so it means I'm leaving my small business for an extended period of time. And that's a lot more frightening than a lion.Taking a vacation when you're a small-business owner whether for one week or one month is never easy. I'm talking about a real vacation one where you disconnect from your day-to-day responsibilities and recharge your batteries. Not the kind where you're continually checking email and returning phone calls while waiting in line at Disney World. It takes a lot of preparation to be able to step away from your office, and if you're going someplace where you'll be hard or impossible to reach say the middle of the Serengeti it's especially challenging. 2. Make sure your bills are being paid. Set up automatic online payment for standard, recurring bills, such as rent, phone, Internet and health insurance. This reduces the number of bills you have to deal with. For other bills, it's easiest if you already have someone designated to deal with your accounts payable, such as a bookkeeper or office manager. If not, perhaps your accountant will handle it while you're away. 5. Arrange for phone calls and emails to be covered. If you won't get interrupted too often, you may just want to do this yourself. If you're leaving the country, you can get an international plan on your cellphone before you leave the United States. You also can get an inexpensive local phone and SIM card at your destination. Or just have a staff member handle calls, if you have staff or use call forwarding to a trusted friend if you don't.
