This week’s reading opens with Spider and the Filthy Assistants exploring the city after it has been devastated by the storm. They make their way to the to the hideout of Spider’s “old friend” Fred Christ. Along the way, Spider sees that the storm has ravaged the city. The damage is in stark contrast to the party line that Callahan is pushing. He is telling the world that he is working hard to clean up the city, but there is no help being offered to those in the city.

Once Spider, Yelena and Channon find Fred Christ, Spider beats him senseless. After the beating, Christ admits that he was the one who sent hookers to Callahan but he doesn’t know that Christ was responsible. Fred Christ knows that it’s not a difficult trail to follow and that he will eventually be discovered and killed, hence his going into hiding.

The next few issues follow Spider as he tries to get more information on the President. Royce, his former editor, works hard to recover all of the information the President has on Spider. Once he does this, he finds proof that Spider was fired at the command of Callahan. Spider manages to find one of the few hookers who was with Callahan and is still alive to testify against him. As they make their way back to Spider’s safe house, they are attacked by assassins in invisible suits.

Once back at the safe house, Spider writes a column all about the Callahan’s indiscretions. He has proof in the form of DNA evidence on a dress left by Callahan on the hooker’s dress. As the story hits the wire, a riot breaks out in one of the city’s slums. The only problem? It’s not a real riot. The riot was faked by Callahan as an excuse to declare martial law. Once Spider’s story is published, one of Spider’s colleagues stands up at a press conference and confronts Callahan about Spider’s proof.

Best Spider Jerusalem Quote: After Spider beats the tar out of Fred Christ, he grabs him by the throat and slams him against the wall. He gives him a mean look and snarls, “Hello, Fred. This is our final conversation. It will be a good one.” Fred knows that Spider won’t hesitate to kill him, especially after he has already beaten him quite severely. This occurs in the last frame of the issue. The next issue picks up there and Fred Christ explains his situation to Spider.

Favorite Frame: The best frame of this week’s reading isn’t actually from the story itself, but rather from the inside cover of one of the issues. It’s a great image of a man and dog almost being run over by Spider’s taxi cab. Spider’s taxi seems almost evil in the image and the onlooker’s reaction is great. For some reason there is also a weird bird that is hovering over the car. At first glance, I thought it was a chicken. Quite frankly, it wouldn’t surprise me if the residents of the city were actually raising chickens in the streets.
