"Boys love tennis shoes," said Gloria Hicks, who sat in the shoe department next to brothers Cameron, 9, and Colin Allen, 7, both students at Hicks' namesake school, Gloria Hicks Elementary School, on Leopard Street.

The boys felt special being with Hicks.

"It's very cool," Cameron, a third-grader said.

His brother was more shy, but grinned big as he jumped out of his chair to try on charcoal-colored Nike shoes with white trim.

Each student was given $100 to spend, and J.C. Penney provided $10 for each $25 spent, making each student's value $140. The electric provider also bought each child a backpack, which Communities In Schools filled with supplies.

"These kids are getting a great start this school year with new clothes and shoes," said Jessica Mahaffey, spokeswoman for CPL Retail Energy. "We hope we're helping to empower them for success."

Woodlawn Elementary School student Henry Garcia, 7, wore the Michael Jordan shoes he picked first, while shopping for clothes. His school doesn't have a strict dress code, so school case manager Rene De La Paz helped Henry pick out a blue shirt with a skateboard image.
