Central Nyack Couple Celebrates 10 Years Together With Same Sex Marriage Ceremony
Gregory Birchett and James O’Toole Jr. were married in a civil ceremony by Clarkstown Town Clerk Justin Sweet and had their civil marriage blessed by the Rev. Richard Gressle of the Grace Episcopal Church in Nyack on Thursday. They were one of the first gay couples to get married by the town clerk under the new marriage equality bill.
By getting married on Aug. 11, they were marking an existing special occasion. It was the third anniversary of their son moving in with them and making them a family.
O’Toole said the ceremony was important to them for the sake of their son.
“The right to marriage has formal legal protections, domestic partnership doesn’t,” he said.
“He is what made us a family,” said O’Toole. “Before that we were a couple. He made us a family.”
Birchett said the marriage equality bill was something they had been hoping for but did not expect.
“I never thought it would be possible,” said Birchett.
Family, friends and the couple’s son attended the ceremony outside town hall. Birchett and O’Toole, both 48 years old, plan to take a honeymoon/vacation to Disney with their son.
